Важнейшая реальная причина события или цепочки событий, результатом которых является предъявление иска по страховому полису. Ущерб должен быть вызван непосредственно застрахованным риском или цепью событий, причиной которых он стал. Например, по полису, покрывающему ущерб от бури, должны быть также покрыты убытки от порчи продуктов в холодильнике, который перестал работать в результате того, что буря вызвала отключение электроэнергии, что и стало непосредственной причиной его размораживания.
